Shooting leaves body in car near school entrance

Miami police say a man was fatally shot in his car early Tuesday while parked in Overtown.

Police identified the man as 31-year-old Darryl Wayne Smith. The shooting happened on Northwest 14th Street just east of Seventh Avenue around 5:30 a.m. In seeing the dead man, a passerby called 911.

Fire Rescue pronounced Smith dead on the scene. Police have no witnesses to the shooting, and the motive remains unclear.

The crime scene caused morning traffic backups and Booker T. Washington High School students to be re-routed from the main entrance, less than 20 yards from where the body was found.

Despite the proximity to the school — 14th Street is also Tornado Way in honor of the school's teams — police say the early-morning homicide had nothing to do with the school.
