Maverick is coming back! That's the latest rumor, anyways, as the highly speculated sequel to Top Gun has recently teased fans yet again. This time, however, the tease seems to be grounded in some truth. The sequel to the beloved 80s classic might actually be ready for flight, as the Mirror[1] reports that Jerry Bruckheimer has been meeting with Tom Cruise[2] to discus s the sequel.
Bruckheimer took to Twitter to get Top Gun fans all rattled up on Wednesday, January 27 by tweeting a picture of him alongside the Maverick himself, Tom Cruise.
"Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2." Bruckheimer tweeted[3].

"It's got me psyched!" one fan tweeted, according to Us Weekly[4].
"Super excited," another said.
It's the closest sign yet to the film actually happening since actor Val Kilmer announced to his Facebook followers that he would be reviving his role as the Iceman character in a sequel last November. The actor, however, had to quickly edit the post and later admitted that he "jumped the top gun."
The project also hit a sudden tragic halt, the New York Daily News[5] reports, when the film's original director, Tony Scott, shockingly committed suicide on August 19, 2012.
Scott had been reportedly brainstorming ideas and locations with Tom Cruise before the 68-year-old director parked his vehicle alongside the Vincent Thomas Bridge, climbed an 18-foot fence, and jumped to his death in Los Angeles Harbor.
Despite the tragedy, Us Weekly reports that last year, Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison confirmed the makings of the sequel to the Oscar-winning 1986 drama with both Tom Cruise (Maverick) and Val Kilmer[6] (Iceman) rejoining the film. He also shared what the film's future plot would revolve around.

It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today," Ellison stated at a press conference.
"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," he continued.
The original Top Gun, which is about fighter pilots at America's combat flying school in Miramar, was a major box-office success. The film for many is viewed as a classic in part because of its fast-paced jet fight's and quotable one-liners like "I feel the need… for speed." Along with the high-octane fights was the love story between Tom Cruise's Maverick and Kelly McGillis, who portrayed Charlie Blackwood.
The movie's soundtrack was also a big hit, and Berlin's track "Take My Breath Away," written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock, went on to win Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.
The film also grossed $365.8 million worldwide in 1986 during a time when movie tickets sold for less than half of what they do nowadays. The film also launched and secured Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer as Hollywood's biggest and brightest stars.
However, while fans can finally get excited about Top Gun 2, a date for starting production has yet to be announced, and according to the Mirror[7], Tom Cruise is busy filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and the thriller Mena.
And referring to Bruckheimer's quote above, nobody really knows what he means by "discussing a little Top Gun." Is he working on a script? Has a production date been set? Fans are just dying to know. But it looks like we'll all just have to keep waiting for more tweets as we continue to feel the need for speed.
