Here is an expanded version of the 5th item from my "Albany Insider" column from Monday:
State Senate Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeffrey Klein is endorsing Sen. Adriano Espaillat's congressional bid to replace retiring veteran Rep. Charles Rangel, the Daily News has learned.
"In Senator Adriano Espaillat I have always found a partner in any fight to help working- and middle-class New Yorkers," Klein (D-Bronx) said. "When it comes to securing fairness and justice for those who are being wronged, whether by a landlord or farmer, Adriano is on the front lines, often leading the way."
He said he worked with Espaillat to focus on "deplorable conditions" in New York City Housing Authority buildings.
"Adriano stepped up to work with me to secure state funding and call for increased accountability," Klein said. "I am proud to endorse him for Congress because we need his tenacity in Washington to break down barriers and build a better future for our city."
Espaillat said he was "grateful" for Klein's support.
"As congressman, I will continue to work with anyone who is committed to ending the crisis in our public housing system, so we can finally get the federal government off the sidelines and provide quality affordable housing to people in need," he said.
Espaillat is facing Assemblyman Keith Wright (D-Manhattan) and five other Dems in the June 28 congressional primary.
Rangel, who is retiring from Congress, has thrown his support behind Wright.
