NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. -- Two elderly couples from Chesterfield County were killed when the SUV they were riding in was struck by a semi along Route 13 on Virginia's Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said a Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling east on Capeville Drive when it pulled across Route 13 and into the path an oncoming semi just after 12:40 p.m.
"The tractor-trailer, a fully-loaded car-carrier, was not able to brake in time or avoid colliding with the Hyundai," Geller. "The impact of the crash caused the Hyundai to spin around and the tractor-trailer cross through the median and come to a stop in the northbound lanes of Route 13."
Officials said the four people in the car, 87-year-old Konrad Erbes and 78-year-old Angelika Erbes as well as 80-year-old Jakob Eng and 76-year-old Theresa A. Eng, died at the scene.
The semi driver was not injured.
Virginia State Police Senior Trooper L.C. Blake is investigating the wreck with the aid of the state police crash reconstruction team.
Police told WTKR they victims were visiting family in Northampton County.
