NIAGARA FALLS – A man who police found in the trunk of a vehicle stopped in the middle of Rhode Island Avenue on Sunday claimed he was kidnapped by three unknown men.
But the victim soon became the suspect after he admitted to police he stole the car and then hid in the trunk, Niagara Falls police said.
Darreon D. Cauley, 19, of 15th Street was charged with felony grand larceny just after 10 a.m. Sunday.
Officers responded to a car alarm in the 1700 block of Rhode Island Avenue and found the black 2016 Chevrolet Malibu in the middle of the road. It appeared unoccupied and locked. But officers said they heard a banging noise coming from the trunk accompanied by a voice yelling, "Get me out of here," according to police reports.
An officer began to break a car window with a baton so they could assist the person in the trunk, but the man opened the trunk on his own, and identified himself as Cauley, police said. While officers were interviewing him, a woman arrived and told police that Cauley, the nephew of her boyfriend, had stolen the rental vehicle from in front of her residence, in the 1500 block of Centre Avenue.
