Rash of car burglaries alarms Canyon police

CANYON, TX (KFDA) -

Canyon police say a dozen vehicles have been broken into during the past two days and are warning drivers to be extra cautious about leaving valuable items in their vehicles.

The Canyon Police Department said many small items have been stolen, including firearms, backpacks and money. The spike in thefts during the past two days caps a busy weekend in which police said they responded to a "significant number" of auto burglaries in the southwest part of town.

Police say a majority of the vehicles were left unlocked with the valuable items left in plain sight. They are urging drivers to prevent such crimes by locking their vehicles and removing all valuable items.

Suspicious activity should be reported to the Canyon Police Department at 655-5005 or Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400.
