Red Bull Sailing flew to a podium finish for 2016 in a hard-fought Extreme Sailing Series final.

With 2016 coming to a close, it's always good to end on a high note. The Red Bull Sailing team[1] did just that in Sydney, Australia in the final Extreme Sailing Series[2] event of the 2016 series.

The Red Bull team, lead by Hans Peter Steinacher[3] and Roman Hagara[4], secured a podium finish for the championship after a nail-biting event in Sydney.

This was the first year the teams were flying on water with the new super-light GC32 boats. These boats hit incredible speeds of 74kph (40 knots) so it's basically like racing full throttle around a Carrera slotcar track[5] in cars that are way too big (and fast) for the track. Long story short – carnage.

With high winds and a full race track there was only one certainty – everything could change in an instant. On Saturday, Red Bull Sailing dominated, and they also won Sunday's penultimate battle, but then slipped to fifth in the event's final race. This disappointing race left them fourth on the Sydney leader board, but it still gave them the edge they needed to grab the final spot on the podium for the series overall.
