The presenter, who takes the reigns from Jeremy Clarkson when the programme returns in May, used his latest column to derail rumours claiming he is proving difficult to work with.
"As we count down to our first show of the new series, in (not James) May, the seemingly inexhaustible stream of 'insider' stories keeps on coming, my most recent favourite being about how 'unprofessional' I have been behaving 'on set'," he wrote in the Mail on Sunday.
"Just a small point here. We don't actually have a set yet for me to misbehave on. Not only has it not been built, but we have only just signed off the final design.
"Once it is built, however, I promise I will try not to let the 'insider' down."
He added: "In fact I am channelling my inner creative rage at this very moment. And the real stars of the show also just keep on coming, from all directions."
The programme's most recent controversy came when Matt LeBlanc was seen performing donuts near the Cenotaph war memorial in central London.
Chris apologised for the scenes on his BBC Radio 2 show but insisted that it wasn't anywhere near as bad as the photos made it seem.
"This isn't a shoot I'm particularly involved with but I do obviously know something about it," he told listeners.
"It doesn't matter what actually happened, it doesn't matter what the circumstances were that could explain this away."
He continued: "What is important about this is what these images look like, but they look entirely disrespectful, which of course was not and would never be the intention of the Top Gear team or Matt.
"These pictures were taken with a long lens camera but the point is that this does not look good at all.
"There have been some very incendiary comments written alongside these pictures and I completely understand all this furore, but the Top Gear team would never, ever do that.
"Retrospectively it was unwise to be anywhere even near the Cenotaph with this motorcar. So on behalf of the Top Gear team and Matt, I would like to apologise unreservedly for what these images seem to portray."
