Zootopia’ Movie Tops Box Office Weekend Again, Sets Course For A Place In The Top 10 Grossing Animated Films

The Zootopia movie has topped Box office domestic grossing for the second successive weekend after receiving revenue of $50 million. Zootopia topped the box office revenue charts last week on its opening weekend grossing $75 million and has now continued on that streak as it seeks to bag as much box office revenue, as possible in the next couple of weeks. The movie is on course to break various records after reaching a domestic total of about $142.6 million in box office revenue[1] and a global figure of about $431.3 million in just 10 days.

After just ten days in theaters, Zootopia has already joined the list of the top 50 highest-grossing animated films of all time. It is currently ranked 45 on the list, but given the rate at which it has been booking box office revenues, it could easily be in the top 30 seven days from today.

Zootopia appears to be doing very well in China as well and this could be key in helping the film to join among the top 10 grossing animation films of all time in box office revenue by the end of the year.

Zootopia, which is directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush has already received approximately $56.5 million in box office revenue from China, which according to statistics is already the third highest-grossing animated movie of all time in the country.

Based on revenue numbers, it appears as though Zootopia has faced little competition in the box office since premiering in theaters last Thursday week. However, this comedy adventure film so off competition from the likes of Gerard Butler's London Has Fallen, which is the sequel to the 2013 film Olympus Has Fallen.

In addition, Zootopia has seen off the challenge of Ryan Reynold's Action Comedy film Deadpool, which topped the box office charts for three weeks through March third. And this weekend it also had to see off the challenge of the newcomer, 10 Cloverfield Lane, which posted a box office grossing of $25.2 million on its opening weekend.

Overall, the top five films this week in terms of domestic box office revenues were, Zootopia with $75 million followed by the science fiction thriller film, 10 Cloverfield Lane with $25.2 million while Deadpool continued to impress in third place after completing a month in theaters with $10.8 million for the weekend.

On the other hand, London Has Fallen followed closely in fourth with $10.7 million while Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, was a distance fifth after receiving box office revenue of about $4.7 million this weekend.

It is clear that Zootopia remains at the top of the list for now and could still carry on through next weekend but with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premiering on March 25, Zootopia's box office dominance is likely to end in the next 10 days.

The DC Comics' Superhero action film is likely to dominate box office revenue charts for the foreseeable future after March 25, which means that the next few days are very important for Zootopia.

Nonetheless, Zootopia seems to be on the right track towards breaking a number of animation films box office records. The film could easily follow in the footsteps of the likes of Inside Out and become one of the fastest animation films to reach a global grossing of $500 million.

With $142.6 million already in the bag, Zootopia is one of the fastest grossing movies in domestic box office revenues after 10 days, currently ranked number 77 on the list while Frozen, which is currently the highest grossing animation movie of all time in box office revenues does not feature in the top 100.

Toy Story 3, which grossed more than $415 million in domestic box office revenues in 10 days tops the list in the animated movies category while Star Wars: The Force Awakens tops the overall list with $930.7 million. Therefore, while Zootopia may not go on to become the highest-grossing film of all time in box office revenue, it appears to have a realistic chance of getting on the list of top ten.
