Best Fits for the Top 10 Uncommitted 2017 QB Recruits

Quarterbacks are a hot commodity at every level of football and the position's paramount importance is annually illustrated on the college recruiting trail. Most premier passers pick up scholarship offers as underclassman and routinely announce collegiate intentions well in advance of their senior season.

Among the nation's top 25 quarterback prospects in 247Sports' 2017 composite rankings, 15 are already committed to a university. That collection includes 5-star talents Tate Martell (Texas A&M), Dylan McCaffrey (Michigan) and Hunter Johnson ^[4] (Clemso n).^[1]^[2]^[3]

Here's a glimpse at the top 10 passers who remain uncommitted as their junior year approaches its conclusion, with a focus on where each may find an ideal fit for the future.

High School: Vanguard (Ocala, Florida)

Size: 6'3 ½", 176 lbs

Recruiting Rundown

N'Kosi Perry ^[5] spent nearly five months committed to Miami but backed off that verbal pledge in February. The Hurricanes' new staff could certainly reemerge in this recruitment, though a recent offer from Auburn thrusts an SEC contender into this chase.

The Tigers suffered a decommitment at the position earlier this cycle and present an attractive opportunity for Perry.

"I like Auburn because I like the offense," he told Kevin Trahan ^[6] of SB Nation. "That's the style I played in high school so that's fun for me."

Perry appears to prefer spread offensive attacks, which provide a natural fit for his abilities. Tennessee and West Virginia both offered in January and should also be considered legitimate suitors here.

He enjoyed a breakout junior campaign, completing 58 percent of passes for 2,510 yards and 33 touchdowns. Perry tossed just three interceptions on 242 attempts, adding 11 scores on the ground.

Kasim Hill ^[7], who transferred to St. John's after spending his first three high school seasons at Gilman (Baltimore, Maryland), collected offers from Penn State, Northwestern and Syracuse as an underclassman. His recruitment reached a new level late this winter when opportunities opened at Nebraska, Utah, Vanderbilt and nearby Maryland.

Expect new Terapins head coach D.J. Durkin to keep Hill in the spotlight throughout 2017 recruiting efforts after losing grips on prized local 2016 quarterback Dwayne Haskins ^[8] last cycle. Haskins, who signed with Ohio State, was once viewed as the eventual face of a new Maryland era on offense.

Perhaps Hill will ultimately be the passer to fill that role in College Park, where the potential for early playing time is a strong selling point.

"I was one of only a few quarterbacks at their junior day. I got to sit down and talk to (offensive coordinator) coach (Walt) Bell, and that was a very good conversation. Me and my dad got to sit down and talk to coach Durkin, and they are very excited about recruiting me," he told Brian Dohn ^[9] of Scout.

If Penn State intensifies recruiting efforts with Hill, the Nittany Lions might ultimately derail Durkin's plans. Head coach James Franklin has enjoyed immense success recruiting the Mid-Atlantic region.

Jack Coan ^[10] is among the most well-traveled recruits you'll find in this cycle, as he's already managed to spend time on several college campuses. Trips to Michigan, Maryland, Rutgers and Stanford occurred last summer, while his latest visits include Northwestern, Syracuse and Wisconsin (he'll be in Madison this weekend, according to Andrew Rosin ^[11] of SB Nation.

Coan, who collected 3,431 yards and 40 touchdowns through the air last fall, is also likely to visit Nebraska. This battle could come down to several Big Ten Conference schools and in-state Syracuse, with momentum moving slightly toward the Northwestern Wildcats as spring approaches.

Rutgers, Nebraska and Wisconsin will also push hard, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Michigan State insert itself into the equation as things progress. His mobility is above-average among pro-style prospects and makes him a viable option in various schemes.

Coan's athleticism is further evidenced on the lacrosse field, where he earned several scholarship offers and actually once committed to Notre Dame. Fully focused on football, his recruitment may greatly expand in the months ahead.

Avery Davis ^[12] earned early collegiate interest in the Lone Star State and beyond, securing offers from Texas Tech, Oregon State, SMU and Kansas before the end of his sophomore year. By the end of a sensational junior season, that list grew to included Colorado and Notre Dame, while Houston, Utah, Kansas State, Virginia, Purdue and Iowa State each extended offers this winter.

The Fighting Irish are known to be selective when it comes to targeting young passers and opted to make Davis an early priority. Notre Dame's staff hasn't shied away from "undersized" quarterbacks, as recent signees Ian Book and Brandon Wimbush also lack prototypical size behind center.

Davis has continuously reciprocated interest from the Fighting Irish and is expected to visit South Bend for a March 19 junior-day event, according to Tyler James ^[13] of ND Insider. He's athletic enough to do everything Brian Kelly ^[14] expects from the position and an early pledge could be in the cards if his upcoming trip is a positive experience for both sides.

His 2015 season featured 2,148 passing yards, 25 touchdown tosses and four interceptions. Davis added 873 rushing yards and 13 scores on the ground.

Size: 6'2", 210 lbs

Bailey Hockman ^[15] seemingly wrapped up his recruitment months before last season with a June commitment to Georgia. However, he backed off that verbal pledge shortly after the departure of former Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt ^[16], reopening the process midway through December.

Offers arrived from Arizona State and Michigan within 48 hours of his decommitment, and recent visits ^[17] have continued to reshape this race. Hockman traveled to Tennessee, Florida State, Auburn and North Carolina during the past month.

Buzz has particularly picked up for the Tar Heels in 247Sports crystall ball, with ten straight experts projecting him to land in Chapel Hill next year. Junior Mitch Trubisky is expected to start at North Carolina, where Marquise Williams racked up back-to-back 3,000-yard passing seasons in 2014 and 2015.^[18]

Auburn, Florida State and Tennessee each have more perceived talent along their respective quarterback depth chart, so the Tar Heels may present a clearer path to early snaps in a high-powered aerial attack. A recent "re-offer"^[19] from Alabama provides another wrinkle of intrigue.

Hockman emerged as a national recruit in 2014 with 3,597 passing yards and 42 touchdowns, according to Jeff Sentell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ^[20]

The process may be approaching a conclusion for Tristian Gebbia, the top-rated remaining uncommitted passer in quarterback-rich California. He's focused on five schools entering the spring, according to Omaha.com, identifying Nebraska, Ole Miss, Washington, Washington State and West Virginia as his favorites.^[21]^[22]

Gebbia's relationship with the Cornhuskers staff precedes increased interaction with other programs, and he spent time on campus last season. Longstanding dialogue puts Nebraska in excellent position to once again lure a top California quarterback to Omaha.

"Nebraska's a great place. That fan base has been rocking and sold out crowds since the 1960s," Gebbia told 247Sports ^[23] in February. "There are going to be guys from Calabasas that end up there. It's a familiar place. I've been up there a couple times. They put guys in the league and I can't say enough great things about Nebraska."

He could continue to target fellow 4-star Calabasas junior Keyshawn Johnson Jr.^[24] in college, as the coveted wide receiver is projected to sign with Nebraska by 60 percent of experts' predictions in 247Sports' crystal ball ^[25].

Lowell Narcisse ^[26] welcomed several heavyweight college programs to his recruitment as an underclassman, carefully considering Clemson and in-state LSU before committing to Auburn last summer. He reopened things in January, creating an opportunity for other teams to join the mix or strengthen past sales pitches.

Narcisse, a left-handed passer, missed the entire 2015 regular season with a torn ACL before returning to guide St. James during a deep playoff run (10 total touchdowns and no interceptions in three postseason victories, per MaxPreps ^[27]). Just months after suffering the knee injury, he still exhibited enough mobility to impact games as a rusher, though we look forward to watching him operate at a 2014 level that resulted in 1,402 yards and 18 scores on the ground.

His healthy sophomore season also featured 3,124 passing yards and 31 touchdown tosses. Narcisse could eventually rise toward the top of this cycle's dual-threat quarterback rankings with an impressive, complete senior campaign.

This blend of elite athleticism makes him a potential immediate-impact college playmaker at a position LSU must address aggressively in its 2017 class. Auburn will contend for a re-commitment but Les Miles ^[28] and his staff will continue to prioritize this in-state prospect until he pledges.

Jake Bentley landed several offers as an underclassman and has spent significant time at in-state Auburn. This recruitment took a unique twist when his father left the Tigers staff to join Will Muschamp ^[30] at South Carolina.^[29]

The Gamecocks are clearly a key contender given his father's role on the offensive staff, though there's company atop Bentley's list from at least three other schools. He named Georgia, Miami and Stanford favorites, alongside South Carolina, this winter during a discussion with Will Sammon ^[31] of the Opelika-Auburn News.

It appears to be an extremely tight chase, though the Bulldogs have presumably fallen back following a recent pledge from 4-star quarterback Jake Fromm ^[32]. Mark Richt carried his interest in Bentley to Miami, where the roster is currently devoid of a passer he hand-picked.

"With Coach Richt being such a good guy, you know you're going to be taken care of," he told Sammon.

Stanford is extremely selective with its quarterback offers, so that option gives Bentley plenty to consider moving forward. Alabama, fresh off losing Fromm, extened an offer earlier this week.

Bentley completed 58 percent of his pass attempts last fall, per MaxPreps, tallying 2,834 passing yards and 28 touchdowns.^[33]

Recruiting Rundown

Georgia and Stanford surged toward the top of a long list of contenders for Davis Mills ^[34] during recent weeks but it's difficult to envision him signing with the Bulldogs as long as 4-star quarterback Jake Fromm ^[35] remains entrenched in the class.

Fromm's recent flip from Alabama would seem to aid Stanford's case. The Cardinal welcomed Mills to campus in February and appear likely to land either the Peach State product or the aforementioned Jake Bentley ^[36] when the dust settles next winter.

Mills, who warrants consideration as the No. 1 overall quarterback in a Georgia class that features several top-level talents, His offer list also features UCLA, Wisconsin, Cal and Louisville, but the Cardinal look to be in great position for a relatively early pledge.

He threw for 5,088 yards and 51 touchdowns during the past two seasons and would essentially battle 2016 Stanford signee KJ Costello for the role as future of face of the Cardinal attack.

Tua Tagovailoa has emerged as a star at the same high school where Marcus Mariota once decimated defenses. Unlike the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner, who had limited collegiate opportunities, Tagovailoa is a well-known commodity in his class.^[37]

He received offers from USC, UCLA, Ole Miss, Arizona State and Nebraska well before his junior season, which was followed by a pair of SEC opportunities. Texas A&M, already carrying a commitment from 5-star quarterback Tate Martell ^[38], extended an offer in February and Alabama joined the chase weeks later.

The Crimson Tide identified Tagovailoa as a key target in the aftermath of a recent decommitment at the position, presenting him with an opportunity to visit Tuscaloosa with a scholarship in hand. Alabama continues to transition its recruiting efforts toward mobile quarterbacks and he certainly fits the bill.

Among a contentious collection of Pac-12 possibilities, USC is considered the favorite with 77 percent of signing day projects in 247Sports' crystal ball ^[39]. If proximity to the Pacific is a primary concern, any SEC squad will encounter a difficult task in topping the Trojans, who seem to have a greater need than Alabama for elite talent on the quarterback depth chart.

Tagovailoa burst onto the scene as a sophomore when he compiled 2,583 passing yards, 576 rushing yards, 33 touchdown tosses and just three interceptions, per MaxPreps ^[40].
