The Arnold Palmer Invitational offered a few golfers to get a footing in our top 10 before the Match Play Championship this week in Austin. Let's take a look at who rose and who fell in the rankings this week. But first a refresher!
1. Scope is last two months of tournaments
2. We value different things but will take into account wins, top 10s and money
3. If you haven't played, you don't get ranked (i.e. Tiger Woods[1])
4. Recency matters
5. PGA Tour will be main focus but bigger European events will be factored in (i.e. Rickie Fowler[2]'s win in Abu Dhabi)
1. Adam Scott[3] (Last week: 1): A T12 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational is good enough for me to keep him No. 1. There's been no better golfer over the last month. It's not even really that close. Official World Golf Ranking: 6
2. Rickie Fowler (2): Fowler skipped Bay Hill. But at least he let Arnold Palmer know. OWGR: 5[4]
3. Bubba Watson[5] (3): Same for Bubba. OWGR: 4
[6]
4. Phil Mickelson[7] (4): Mickelson also did not play. No word on whether he told Palmer though. OWGR: 19
5. Danny Willett[8] (6): Willett skipped Bay Hill. He will play the Match Play Championship this week where he was a semifinalist last year. OWGR: 11
6. Rory McIlroy[9] (5): McIlroy finished top 30 at Bay Hill which is poor for him and lost his No. 2 slot in the world golf rankings to Jason Day. OWGR: 3[10]
7. Jordan Spieth[11] (7): Spieth skipped Bay Hill and is in danger of turning over his No. 1 ranking to Jason Day. OWGR: 1
8. Jason Day (NR): Speaking of Day. Welcome to the rankings, my man! Day won Bay Hill and has finished in the top 25 at each of his last three events. He hasn't played that much this year but he's improved from the beginning. OWGR: 2
9. Charl Schwartzel[12] (8): Schwartzel skipped Bay Hill. OWGR: 21
10. Louis Oosthuizen[13] (9): Oosty did not play Palmer's tournament either. OWGR: 18
11. Hideki Matsuyama[14] (13): Matsuyama is back! He had a sweet little backdoor top 10 with a 67 on Sunday at Bay Hill. He's been impressive when he hasn't been injured this year. OWGR: 13
12. Henrik Stenson[15] (16): I give Stenson credit for picking his spots. He's finished in the top 12 each of the last two weeks including a T3 at Bay Hill. He's the only golfer in the top 64 who is not injured but will skip the Match Play Championship. OWGR: 7
13. Jimmy Walker[16] (10): Walker returns home to Texas for the first ever Match Play Championship in Austin. OWGR: 24
14. Sergio Garcia[17] (11): Garcia sat out Bay Hill too. OWGR: 14
15. Brooks Koepka[18] (12): Koepka was a no show as well. He will play in Austin. OWGR: 20
16. Dustin Johnson (14): Johnson missed Bay Hill too. OWGR: 9
17. Brandt Snedeker[19] (15): Snedeker made the cut at Bay Hill and finished top 40. It was a pretty average week. OWGR: 17
18. J.B. Holmes[20] (17): Holmes missed Bay Hill as well. OWGR: 23
Don't worry, Jason, you're in the top 12. (USATSI)
