While Clarkson has so far refused to comment on the new programme, former Top Gear co-presenter James May has been positive about the new show, telling the MailOnline he was a "massive fan".

Their highest episode manage to draw in a staggering 8.4 million fans when Formula One hero Lewis Hamilton joined the trio in December 2007. The new, rebooted series follows largely the same format as the old one - more than one reviewer joked that it hasn't "reinvented the wheel".

Evans, LeBlanc, motor sport entrepreneur Eddie Jordan, racing driver Sabine Schmitz and journalists Chris Harris and Rory Reid were announced as the show's new presenters in February (16).

He explained in an interview last week: "Five million-plus would be great, after that it doesn't matter".

Meanwhile a lot of audiences expressed that they would be turning to see Hammond, Clarkson and May in their series The Grand Tour ^[1] on Amazon Prime.

"Some diehards will conclude that the new Top Gear was like choosing between a classic auto and a plastic reproduction - what was gained in ease of use was lost in character".
