A top Islamic State commander in Iraq's Anbar province was killed last week by a coalition airstrike, the Pentagon said Monday.
Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said Abu Wahib and three others were killed when their vehicle was struck on May 6 in Rutba, according to the Associated Press. Wahib's death is "another blow" to the group's leadership "that will further degrade its ability to operate," Cook said.
"I think it is fair to say that ISIL leadership has been hit hard by coalition efforts and this is another example of that," Cook told reporters. "It is dangerous to be an ISIL leader in Iraq and Syria these days and for good reason."
The Islamic State is also known as ISIL or ISIS.
A senior U.S. official, who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said it was an American airstrike, according to the AP.
Cook says Wahib was a former member of al-Qaida in Iraq and has appeared in Islamic State execution videos.
There was a false report earlier this year that said Wahib was targeted by airstrikes near the town of Hit and killed, according to the Washington Post[2].[1]
This is the first time the Pentagon said Wahib, considered to be one of the most brutal commanders, was dead, the Post reported.
