Car enthusiasts come out for third annual Volkstober in NOTO

About 30 Volkswagens — from World War II vintage cars to recently restored Beetles — lined North Kansas Avenue at the 3rd annual Volkstober in NOTO on Sunday.

First-time participant Ed White was showing a white 1969 Beetle with an upgraded motor.

VWs bring back a lot of memories for people, he said.

White said he wanted to be part of the event this year because there aren't any other VW shows in the area and because NOTO is a good setting.

The event featured live band Sierra and included two sets of judges.

Dave Holzmeister, who has judged all three years, said there was a good variety with some restored cars and a few originals.

It makes judging interesting and every year it's a little more difficult because there's more variety, he said.

Categories included Best Beetle Pre-and-Post 1972, Best Convertible and Most Creative Paint Job, among others. Ryan Smith won Best of Show with his 2012 VW Golf.

Topeka Wide Associated VW Club president Amy Harrison said it was a beautiful day to be out and visit the historical district. Temperatures were in the mid-80s Sunday afternoon.

VW owners have formed a great community and it's great to support local NOTO businesses, she said.

A group of VW enthusiasts from the Kansas City area caravanned to Topeka Sunday to participate. Tim McEntee said he is the original owner of a 1973 Super Beetle, which he purchased when he was 19-years-old.

Kevin Koch and his family, of Tecumseh, were driving when they heard about the show on the radio and decided to swing by.

"It's pretty cool," Koch said.

Half of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Topeka Rescue Mission and half will go to the NOTO on the Move Association, Harrison said.
