SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) —
A car belonging to 48-year-old Nichele Johnson and a body have been recovered from the Sacramento River, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.
The recovery happened about 11:30 a.m. Saturday through the efforts of personnel from multiple agencies.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will confirm the identity of the body.
On Sunday, Johnson was driving on Highway 160 in South Sacramento County when her car left the road and went into the Sacramento River, the Sheriff's Department said. The car was not located that night.
The next day, the sheriff's marine detail used sonar technology to search for the car. They found the car in deep water just before sunset, the Sheriff's Department said. Due to the recent storms and swift waters, the county officials decided it was too dangerous for the divers and reached out to other agencies to help with the recovery at the earliest and safest time.
The multiagency recovery happened Saturday morning. Solano County Office of Emergency Services provided its divers and boats. The sheriff's marine detail, U.S. Coast Guard, California Highway Patrol, Sacramento Sheriff's and Rescue personnel and Isleton Fire Department helped with the recovery.
