Mummified body found inside car in garage

An anthropologist will arrive in Detroit on Tuesday to help with the mysterious case of a mummified body found in a garage last week.

It appears the body had been there for years and was beyond the decomposition stage, the paper reported, citing a spokesman for the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

In the later stages of decomposition, when exposed tissue turns brown, similar to that of tanned leather, carrying out a standard autopsy isn't feasible, and can even make it hard to know whether the deceased is male or female, the officer said.

Jackson said that they are also hoping to find out the age and identity of the victim and the cause of death. Authorities have described the finding as a skeleton of brown, leathery bones dressed in trousers, shirt and a sweater.

The body was discovered around 1 p.m. Thursday when a potential home buyer was inspecting a garage on the 19900 block of Spencer.

Police say tenants who lived at the home told officers they never entered the garage because the property owner told them they couldn't use it.

A nearby resident said she was shocked to hear of the discovery and has no idea whose body it could be.

Authorities said the potential homebuyer ventured into the garage and saw the corpse inside a 1990s model Plymouth sedan. Attempts by the Free Press to reach Martinez were unsuccessful.
